It has been almost three weeks since I heard this sad shocking news. There is not a day that you don't come in my mind. Your smile, kind face and positive attitude are things that I always remember whenever your name comes up. You are gone but your memories remain.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Joe Rice since December 2005 when he started working at the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System. Joe was a fixture here in his familiar lab coat sharing stories of his many experiences as a practicing clinician just recently he disclosed that he was one of the first to obtain a Respiratory Care license in the state of California and the number was 46. He would love sharing stories of his many travels and love of food. Joe enjoyed sharing his knowledge with the students from Foothill, Skyline and Hartnell College. I visited Joe prior to his passing to pay my respects to him and hope that he is resting peacefully.

I had a heavy heart when I heard the news about the passing of Joe Rice. He was my Adjunct Pulmonary Function Testing Professor at Foothill College in 2022, coworker at Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Healthcare Systems, and also my friend. Although it was a short time knowing him, he was always so kind and always jolly with his jokes. Because I was his former student and then coworker, he always made sure to take his time to share his knowledge and expertise on Respiratory Care for our patients. He was a kind hearted person who always meant well for all that he encountered. From time to time, he would share his stories of travel and going on cruises with his love for Art. I was able to see him prior to his passing and made sure to let him know that he mattered, he was a great guy, and to thank him for the knowledge and support that he shared and gave me. You will not be forgotten Joe! Rest easy.
