Being a Malatean, the home of the Albano's in Pasay City was a gathering place for us friends of Maan. We have many happy memories of birthday celebrations and just hanging around having fun. Mommy would always manage to magically whip up gourmet meals to feed the hungry teenagers. My favorites - her Chicken a la King, Filipino-style spaghetti, Food 4 the gods, etc. I never noticed the look of exhaustion and stress on her face. She would always be this smiling, calm presence, happy to feed us starving students. We lost touch when Mr. and Mrs. Albano migrated to US in Nov 1984.
By divine design, in 1988 I accepted a job in SF and I had a chance to visit the Albano's at their Trinity Plaza unit. With Tess and family based in Manila and Maan's family based in Hongkong, people would always ask if I'm one of the daughters and Mommy would nod her head in confirmation as she finds it easier done than go through great lengths explaining to people. I used to meet up with her at St. Patrick's Church in SF after the Mass just to catch up like old times. Their home became my sanctuary especially at times when I feel homesick and terribly missed my family and friends back in the Philippines.
I will always remember Mommy with her caring ways and words of wisdom for us girls. She would often say, '"carry your cross lightly" after she patiently listens to my mundane concerns of day-to-day life. I didn't realize exactly what that means until I too became a mother to Earl and Gabby.
Mommy, we are forever grateful for having you touched our lives. Papa is waiting for you to join him in heaven. Please hug Earl for me. I always picture him waiting at the gates of heaven. In the meantime, I've got a lot of work to do "to carry my cross lightly".
Till then....we love you.
