John E. Phillips' Obituary
John Phillips passed away peacefully at his home in Woodside on February 23, 2017 with his loving wife of 55 years, Donna, by his side. He was born on June 11, 1926 in Millbrae, California. John was the long time owner of Half Moon Bay Lumber at 621 Main Street, which he started in 1967. He learned the retail lumber business from his father, who was the owner of Burlingame Lumber for many years. John started his business with just a few thousand dollars and a minimal inventory of basic hardware and lumber items. Over time, he was able to add products and services to fulfill the needs of contractors and homeowners in the coastal community. John always enjoyed interacting with his customers, suppliers, and other business associates and was a fixture in the community for over 25 years. He also served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as an electrician on a destroyer escort in the Pacific Theater. John enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, and playing golf with his two sons, Peter and Stephen, as well as many travels with his wife, Donna, after his retirement. He will be laid to rest at Skylawn in a private family service.
