John Y. Chiu's Obituary
John Y. Chiu passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at the age of 90.John was born in Hong Kong on June 18, 1929, the sixth of nine siblings; he had five older sisters, two younger brothers, and one younger sister. He was baptized at St. Stephen’s Church.John graduated from university in Hong Kong and became a teacher. He met Agnes Lau in 1957, and they married on December 27, 1962. His first two sons, Johnson and Daniel, were born in 1963 and 1964. As part of God’s great plan, they were able to immigrate to the United States and arrived in San Francisco in November 1965. John worked in a grocery store in Los Banos, CA. About a year later in 1966, he found a job at UCSF working as a lab research assistant. John faithfully serve as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. In 1975 and 1977, his daughter and third son, Margaret and Andrew, were born.In 1986, John survived a heart attack and retired early at the age of 57. While he had many health issues and was no longer able to serve at church, he still attended Sunday service regularly.Early November 2019, John was hospitalized after a fall. Soon it was determined that he had terminal cancer and was given a prognosis of one month, so he was brought home on hospice care.John is survived by his wife, Agnes; three sons, Johnson, Daniel, and Andrew; one daughter, Margaret; two daughters-in-law, Andrea and Rose; one son-in-law, Jeffrey; and 6 grandchildren, Christal, Summer, Lauren, Caitlin, Cameron, and Carson. He is also survived by his older sister and his younger brother and many nieces and nephews.Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 7th, 1:00 p.m. at Skylawn Memorial Park, San Mateo. Interment to follow. Consolation meal will be at Grand Palace Restaurant at 359 Grand Avenue, South San Francisco.
