Our Beloved Bay Area Uncle: Flying or driving to San Francisco and spending the holidays at Uncle Jerry?s and Auntie Diana?s house in Richmond was always one of the top highlights for the three of us growing up. Uncle Jerry was generous, caring, welcoming, always up-to-date on the latest technology. He was fond of Star Trek and performance cars, and the house was full of Pong, Atari, Nintendo and Amiga video games ? plus an exercise bike, which I always liked to take for a spin. Our big-hearted uncle greeted us with equally big hugs while asking about our grades at school, admonishing us to grow up to be the fine young adults he knew we could be, the same way he raised our cousins Steven and David. Uncle Jerry personified the Cool Uncle who also was dialed in to all things family. His unwavering devotion to Auntie Diana and our cousins outshone even the brightly-lit Christmas tree we looked forward to seeing each year. Later on, Uncle Jerry warmly welcomed our cousin-in-law Gina into the family, and got to be the doting grandpa he always wanted to be to his grandson Mark. When Uncle Jerry entered retirement following his distinguished career in engineering, he could often be seen on carefree road trips with Auntie Diana all over the West Coast. He worked hard, raised Steven and David to be good and decent members of society, loved Auntie Diana with all his heart, and always wanted to know how extended family was doing, and how he could help. I?d like to close by sharing a photo of Uncle Jerry with much of Mom?s side of the family. Uncle Jerry and his family didn?t get to visit Hawaii too much then, so we were overjoyed when everyone got together along with Grandma Sandy to celebrate her 70th birthday. If you?ll pardon the Star Trek reference, I wish Uncle Jerry a well-deserved rest in the Undiscovered Country, somewhere up above even the stars. We all miss him terribly, but I know Grandpa Stanley and Grandma Sandy are happy to have him back with them in heaven. With Love, Your Hawaiian Nephew Deryck
