Jean Lo Chan's Obituary
Jean Lo Chan
January 8, 1930 – December 20, 2023
Family and Friends, we are deeply saddened by the loss of Jean at age 93 due to natural causes on December 20,2023 in San Francisco, CA. She passed peacefully at home with her entire family by her side.
Jean was born January 8, 1930 in Manila, Philippines to Lo Ching and Mak Lei Qun. She completed her high school graduation and worked in her family grocery business in the Philippines where she met her husband Fausto Luis Chan and eventually married on February 23, 1957.
Jean was the ultimate Mom and supportive wife as Luis travelled often for his job at Pepsi Co International. She moved from the Philippines to many exotic locations living in Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong and eventually settling in San Francisco where all her children reside. Throughout all these travels to different countries, her main focus was always to ensure the kids were taken care of. She took care of everything at home so her kids had everything they need to focus on their education. With the exposure to all the cultures and cuisines during her travels, Jean became the ultimate chef, where family dinners consisted of at least 6 courses balanced with soup, vegetables, main dishes and dessert. She would spend all day tirelessly preparing elaborate meals daily for the family. In her spare time, Jean enjoyed playing mahjong with her friends and would travel with Luis regularly through the years.
Jean was very mindful of her traditional values and the importance of family and new friendships in all those countries. While she was very strict throughout her children’s upbringing, she instilled all the same values, passions and priorities in life she had. Jean’s children are the embodiment of her and in total are the truest reflection of her character. All her children are even closer today and feel very fortunate to have learned from her and have each other.
Upon finally settling in San Francisco after Luis’ retirement in 1996, she was the ultimate grandmother and a prominent figure in the upbringing of all her 9 grandchildren. Unfortunately in her later years, she was not able to be as prominent a figure with her first great grandchild, Liam…she would have loved to be there for him.
To this day, Jean lives on in the character of her children and grandchildren. In her recipe’s that are still being passed on today to the grandkids that are just learning to cook. In the joy and laughter and the feelings of home during family meals cooked with her same devotion and commitment. Jean will be most remembered for her love and devotion to her family, and her tireless work ethic and dedication to create
the best home for her family. Her legacy lives on in San Francisco, in each of the homes of her children and grandchildren.
Jean is survived by her five children and their spouses; Diana, Grace & Ramon, Cynthia, Richard & Helen and Anthony; and his nine grandchildren; Michael, Cameron, Jennifer, Chris, Casey, Kailey, Kayla, Tyler, Hayden and great grandchild Liam. Jean will be joining Luis and her son in law Dan Stengel in heaven. She will be greatly missed, never forgotten and eternally loved.
