I'm still struggling to cope with Jane's untimely death. I had known her for more than forty years. She studied with me and wrote her Ph.D. dissertation under my direction, and later became one of the finest translators I have ever had the pleasure of reading and working with. She had an extraordinarily lucid critical mind and a gift for writing clear, elegant prose. At the time of her death we had just collaborated on a translation of a long biography of the German philosopher Martin Heidegger. I only wish Jane could have seen Gregory Fried’s very laudatory review of this translation, Without Jane, the it would never have been as good as it is. I will miss Jane forever.
