James Shugate Louis' Obituary
James Shugate Louis was born on March 1, 1919 in Gulfport, Mississippi to Cheneway Louis and Ing Shee. He was the sixth in a family of 14 children (he had six brothers and seven sisters).He served in the Army’s 7th Infantry Division from May 1941 to October 1945 and received two Bronze Stars for his service in the Pacific Theater.Several years after his discharge from the Army, he travelled to China and on February 16, 1947, he married Gee Poi Jin (Grace) in Shanghai. They settled in San Francisco and had a family that included three daughters and their families: Jeannie and husband Sam and son Matthew; Marjorie; and Susan and husband Roy, son Jeffrey, daughter Kimberly and her husband Anthony.James and Grace owned and operated a laundry and a floral shop for several years. However, James’ career was in the restaurant business and he spent over 30 years working for Trader Vic’s and Senor Pico Restaurant.His hobbies included photography, fishing, and growing orchids. He was also active at the Self-Help for the Elderly Senior Center and volunteered by teaching classes on how to care for orchids, and how to bake cookies, cheesecake, and apple pies and apple tarts.James passed away peacefully on February 3, 2015. He was predeceased by his wife Grace, who passed away in 1989. He is survived by his three daughters, two sons-in-law, three grandchildren, sister Lillian, brother Sam, and numerous in-laws, cousins, nephews, and nieces.Funeral services will be held at Skylawn Funeral Home, Crystal Springs Chapel, on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 11 am. Following the gravesite service, a lunch reception will be held in The Vista Room at Skylawn.
