Iris C. Brown's Obituary
Iris Cecelia Brown , 93, of San Francisco, California passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at a local hospice facility. Iris was born to Felix and Catherine "Rena" Friend on October 30, 1915, in Liberty, Texas. Iris was the oldest of 8. Three of her siblings died shortly after birth. She grew up in Houston, Texas and that is where she met and married her husband of 24 years, Reverend Cary C Brown. She gave her life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church, Houston, Texas. She was a shining example of His teachings, loving unconditionally and touching the lives of all who knew her. Upon moving to San Francisco, in 1943, Iris and Cary joined Third Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Dr. Frederick Douglas Haynes Senior. Iris served her church faithfully and was actively involved in the life of Third Baptist. She held various offices in Deborah Circle; an active member of the senior's group and a faithful member of Sunday School Class #7. Where ever there was a need, Iris was always ready with "eager hands" Iris was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Cary C Brown, her mother and father, Catherine and Felix Friend, her siblings; Lillie Mae Randolph, Felix Friend Jr., Thelma Lucille Goudeau and Rita Conley.She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Karen E Calbert (Ephraim) and 3 grandchildren; Kisha Elaine, Ceceilia Karin and James Cary; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and beloved friends.Her strength and fortitude was an inspiration to all. Her smile and shining sprit will never be forgotten and will live on though all of those who knew and loved her. A memorial service will be held at Third Baptist Church, 1399 McAllister St., San Francisco, CA 94115.Instead of flowers, please make a donation to the 3rd Baptist Church Senior Group.
