Iluminada "Luming" Asino Basilio's Obituary
Iluminada Asino Basilio, affectionately known as "Luming" to her friends, "Mom" to her children, and "Lola" to her grandchildren, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2026, at the age of 91. A woman of profound strength, resourcefulness, and faith, she was the true matriarch of her family, ensuring they were always cared for and prepared for a better life.
Born on April 9, 1934, in Biñan, Laguna, Philippines, Luming graduated from Centro Escolar University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. Her early career saw her serving as a librarian in Biñan and working for the government at the Department of Landform. In 1976, she immigrated to San Francisco, California, where she settled in the Sunset District for nearly five decades before moving to Peninsula Del Rey in 2023.
Luming was a powerhouse who "did everything." While raising her family and caring for her own parents, she worked full-time as an accounting auditor for the Department of Transportation, managing the toll bridges of San Francisco. At home, she was the anchor—managing finances, household needs, and the futures of the next generation.
A Home Economics major at heart, her house was always filled with creativity and tradition. She filled summer breaks with arts and crafts projects for her children and coordinated family gatherings to make Filipino staples like longaniza, tocino, lumpia, and red salted eggs. Though she famously enjoyed "instructing" her husband, Mar, on how to cook, her real legacy was the wisdom she passed down. She often reminded her daughters of the importance of self-care, urging them to take at least thirty minutes a day for themselves. "Always take good care of yourselves," she would say, "because you are a wife and a mother."
Luming had a deep love for flowers, which was evident to anyone who visited her home. She found great joy in her garden, where she tended to an abundance of orchids in container pots, creating a vibrant sanctuary for her family to enjoy. Her beautiful soul, kindness, and unwavering faith shaped the lives of multiple generations. Her family finds comfort knowing she was not in pain and is now at peace.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Mariano C. Basilio, known by many as "Mar"; her daughter, Marilou Mintalar and her husband Eric, along with their children Blake and Sydney; her son, Dino Basilio and his wife Susan; and her son, Jener Basilio and his wife Angelica, along with their child Calia. She is predeceased by her daughter, Marites Basilio, and is remembered by Marites' children, Nicole and Clayton.
