Howard H. Mechalovitz's Obituary
Howard Mechalovitz, age 93, passed away on January 22, 2017 at his residence in Foster City, California where he resided since 1977. He was a loving husband of 50 years to Joan Rippner Mechalovitz who passed away on November 17, 2016.Howard was born on June 4, 1923, to Samuel and Esabel (Belle) Mechalovitz. He grew up in Shaker Heights, Cuyahoga County in Ohio and attended Ohio State University. His younger brother, Donald Mechalovitz, pre-deceased him on August 5, 2013. Donald was a professor of Political Science at Kent State University.Howard served in the 9th Infantry Division, and participated in the Omaha Beach invasion in Normandy on June 6, 1944. He was an avid volunteer at the USO at the San Francisco International Airport until his passing. In 2014 he was honored by the USO for his 5,000+ hours of service over a span of 28 years. Howard, who was a proud recipient of the Purple Heart, was the first USO volunteer to fly with fellow World War II heroes during the honor flight to Washington DC in 2011.Howard was a dedicated husband, brother, son and loving friend to many. He was loved by all who met him. Howard will indubitably be remembered for his infectious smile and wonderful sense of humor.Services will be held at 2 pm, Monday, January 30, 2017, at Skylawn Memorial Park, Hwy 92 and Skyline Blvd, San Mateo, California.In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the USO at www.uso.org/donate.
