Howard Frohlich's Obituary
Howard Frohlich, a long-time resident of the San Francisco Peninsula passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side. Born in White Plains, New York to Siegfried and Beatrice Frohlich, he was 93 years old. Howard was raised by Morton and Ida Riley in Los Altos, California. It was there he attended and graduated from Mountain View High School in 1934. Howard graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1941 with a B.S. in Economics. Howard served in the US Navy during both World War II and the Korean War; with his service highlighted by his time aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La. In 1948 Howard went on a USO skiing trip organized by the Sierra Club. He enjoyed the trip so much so that upon his return, he joined the Sierra Club commencing a life long passion for backpacking, skiing, white-water kayaking, mountaineering, and becoming an ardent environmentalist. Howard was a contributing writer to the Yodeler, the local Sierra Club newsletter, acting as senior editor from 1956 to 1959.Howard met and married Irene Rieger in 1959. Howard Frohlich is survived by his son William Frohlich and grandson Kyle Frohlich of Martinez, CA; his daughter Christine Frohlich of Berkeley, CA; and his sister Margo Palmer of Virginia Beach, VA. Any donations in Howards Frohlich’s name can be given either to the Sierra Club (San Francisco) or Chaparral House (nursing care facility; Berkeley, CA).
