Hecheng Liu's Obituary
With great sadness, we announce the passing of renowned Pipa Solo Artist Mr. Liu Hecheng. Mr. Liu passed away in the hospital at 2:47 pm on Sunday, March 16th, after a hard-fought battle with Interstitial Lung Disease. He was 64 years old.
Born in 1961 in Beijing, China, Liu Hecheng was admitted to the primary school affiliated with the Central Conservatory of Music in 1972. He was a rare student in the Pipa world who completed the entire academic curriculum of the Central Conservatory of Music from primary school to university. Liu Hecheng graduated in 1984 with a degree in Pipa Solo Performance. In 1984, based on his outstanding performance, he was hired by the Central National Orchestra as a pipa player. Liu Hecheng's pipa won him the 1989 Shancheng Cup Excellence Award. He performed in many renowned venues, from Carnegie Hall in the United States to the Golden Hall in Austria. In 1989, Beijing Television produced a special program featuring him called "Liu Hecheng's Pipa Performance". In 2003, he recorded and published his Pipa solo album, titled "Ambush from All Sides".
Since immigrating to the United States, Liu Hecheng devoted his life to the inheritance and development of traditional Chinese music, especially in the performance and teaching of pipa, zhongruan, and liuqin. As an important member of the California Youth Chinese Orchestra, Laney College’s Great Wall Youth Orchestra, he was an exceptional teacher and mentor and was deeply respected and loved by students. Many of his students have achieved considerable success under his careful teaching and have become new stars in the Chinese music world. His impact continues to resonate in the lives of those he touched.
Outside of his life in music, Liu Hecheng enjoyed playing golf and fishing with his friends, spending time with his grandchildren, and exploring culinary delights. Mr. Liu Hecheng is survived by his two older sisters and their families in Beijing, his daughter, son-in-law, and his two grandchildren.

怀着无比沉痛的心情，我们悲痛地宣布，加州青年国乐团和长城国乐团琵琶老师、著名国乐艺术家刘和成先生因病医治无效，于三月十六日星期天下午兩点四十七分不幸辞世，享年 64 岁。
刘和成1961年出生于中国北京，1972年考入中央音乐学院附小, 是他这一代琵琶界少有的从小学到大学完成中央音乐学院全部学制的学生。刘和成于1984年毕业，获得琵琶独奏表演学位。1984年，他以出色的表现被聘为中央民族乐团琵琶演奏员。刘和成的演奏为他赢得了1989年山城杯优秀演奏奖。他曾在美国卡内基音乐厅、奥地利金色大厅等众多知名场所演出。1989年，北京电视台为他制作了专题节目《刘和成演奏的琵琶》。2003年，他录制并出版了琵琶独奏专辑《十面埋伏》。
刘和成老师一生致力于中国传统音乐的传承与发展，尤其在琵琶，中阮，柳琴演奏与教学领域取得了卓越成就。作为加州青年国乐团及Laney大学长城青年国乐团的重要成员，他不仅是琵琶演奏的艺术家，更是无数年轻学子的良师益友。刘老师的琴声如流水般悠扬，饱含深情，他在音乐上的造诣和对传统文化的热爱，深深地影响了身边的每一个人。
多年来，刘和成老师秉持着＂教书育人＂的信念，耐心教导每一位学生，不仅传授技艺，更引导他们理解和感受中国传统音乐的灵魂。他的教学风格温和且严谨，深得学生们的敬仰和喜爱。许多学生在他的悉心教诲下，取得了不小的成就，成为了国乐界的新星。刘老师的离世，令我们痛失一位杰出的导师、朋友和艺术家。
刘老师不仅仅是琵琶演奏的专家，更是一位优秀的文化传播者。他通过演奏、讲座和教学，向世界展示了中国传统文化的博大精深。无论是国内还是海外的音乐节，他的每一次演出都深深打动着听众。
刘和成老师一生的艺术成就和无私奉献，将永载国乐历史，他的精神和音符将永远回响在我们的心中，成为我们继续前行的力量源泉。
刘老师的业余爱好包括与朋友打高尔夫球、钓鱼、陪伴外孙玩以及品尝美食。刘和成先生的遗属包括两个姐姐和她们在北京的家人、女儿、女婿和两个外孙。
在此，我们向刘老师的家人致以最深切的慰问。我们深知，失去亲人之痛难以言表，但刘老师的遗德将永存，我们将一如既往地铭记他为国乐事业做出的贡献。
