Grant Yee Mui's Obituary
Grant Yee Mui, age 86, passed away on Thursday 9/19/2024 at the Mission House Hospice facility in Redwood City due to complications arising from a stroke. He was born on February 15, 1938 in Duanfen town of the Guangdong coastal province in Southern China. He was the youngest son of seven, born to his father, Mui Chan Kwan, and mother, Mui Chan Ming Fung.
He attended Chu Hai College in Hong Kong from 1956-1960, then migrated to the US at age 22. He continued his education at the University of Wyoming and received his undergraduate degree as a structural engineer. He took up residence in Alameda, then Oakland, met our mother in 1969, married June 1971, and then they bought their forever home in San Bruno, CA. He was employed by several bay area companies such as Bechtel, Jackson Steel, Lockhead Martin, and Chevron oil refinery in Richmond. He continued as a part-time designer and contractor beyond the retirement age of 65 and eventually hung up his engineering hat at age 78. He loved the social aspects of his job which is why he continued to work deep into his senior years. He had to stop because his vision, hearing, and memory was declining. The pandemic was a difficult time for many. It was during these years that the social isolation may have contributed more to his advanced dementia.
Grant's happy and loving spirit will be carried on by his wife Kanjana of 53 years, their three kids - Christina (Marvin) Kumashiro, Andrew (Michelle) Mui, Susanna (Michael) Pahimulin, and three grandchildren - Dillon Kumashiro, Kennedy Mui, and Kendall Mui. Some of his favorite pastimes include watching football and basketball, playing basketball, ping pong, camping, fishing, traveling, karaoke, and family gatherings. Sharing a meal together, whether it be at home or at a restaurant, was always a priority. Even though his dementia made it difficult to remember his daily routines, he treasures our family trips and always asks "When are we going again?"
To honor Grant's memory, a service will be held at Skylawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park, San Mateo, on Friday 10/11 12-1:30pm with a Longevity meal to follow at HL Peninsula Garden in Burlingame. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing our amazing father, husband, and grandfather.
