Vale Beithy
Gordon had been battling that terrible thing for more than 4 years, but you would never know it. He had a steely resolve for it not to get in the way of enjoying life. He organised an on-line party for his Banyule High school friends only a few months ago and was talking about having another one only a few days before he left us. Alas, we never got the chance.
We never knew Gordon as Gordon. He was always known as "Bright". Actually, we didn't call him that either. Just "Beithy". Gordon and I go way back to East Ivanhoe Primary and we were in the same class throughout high school. I remember sitting with him in class, making silly flick cartoons, which he called "spurgs". I have no idea why. Wish I could ask him now. We also drew murals of footy players (I recall Beithy was a Fitzroy supporter) on the walls of his parents' house in Robinhood Road. They didn't seem to mind... My mum would have killed us!
The silly kid things faded, but our connection with music never did. We formed our first band with Beithy, Bartho, Prowsey, and me. We started rehearsing in my parents' garage and named the band "Yellow Mist". What a daggy name! Beithy was the bass man. He was learning cello at the time and didn't have a bass guitar, so the cello acted as a scaled down double bass. I remember our first two songs: Stuck in the Middle with You by Stealers Wheel, and Cover of the Rolling Stone by Dr Hook. Eventually, we built up the right gear and got better and louder. We weren't the Beatles, but we were improving. When I see the success of some of our fellow Banyule alumni, I sometimes wonder what might have been if we had applied ourselves a bit more. These days, we have only one thing in common with the Beatles; two down, two to go.
Since then, I have caught up with Beithy for a jam now and again. Always a pleasure and usually pretty tight. His 40th birthday was like a music festival somewhere near the Murray River. He called it "Beithstock". His sister Eileen did a great song with us on the drums. Can't remember what it was but I'm guessing it was "Smoke on the Water".
Anyway, old mate, keep having fun wherever you are. Along with a lot of others, I will miss you.
Cheers, Rob (Barnes)
