George Dorr Pettit's Obituary
George “Rocky” Pettit passed away on July 8, 2023, with his youngest daughter by his side. He moved from his home in Mountain View, CA in October, 2022, to be closer to her in Chino Hills, CA.
Rocky lived in the Bay Area most of his life, after he and his family came out from Illinois when he was a child. He attended and graduated from Carlmont High School, joined the Marines, and after 2 years, took a job at Ampex. He then built a career with the Belmont Fire Department, where he took early retirement in 1979, due to injury.
He then followed his passion as an officiant, umpiring and refereeing for numerous sports organizations for over 40 years. He had been an athlete himself, playing various sports, football, softball, bowling and his favorite, golf. Anyone who knew him knew of his true passion for the Bay Area professional sports teams, the San Francisco Giants, and especially the 49er’s. He had collected Niners memorabilia over the years, and was known for his “49ers Man Cave” where he kept an assortment of mementos, and is fondly remembered in his community as an “all-star, hall of fame member”, greatly respected and well liked.
He was very much loved by his family, and preceded in death by his father John his mother Ruth, and older sister Johnella. He is survived by his daughters, Dawnlyn Pettit, and Kristi Orodpour, his grandchildren Samantha Orodpour and Kamran Orodpour, his younger sister Carolyn Winters, and his niece, Jo McEvoy.
