George Louis Crowder's Obituary
George Louis Crowder passed away peacefully on December 13, 2018 at the age of 97.George was born to George Albert Crowder and Elizabeth Lottie Lahay in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. After immigrating to California, he attended Mission High School in San Francisco and graduated in 1940. In 1948, he met and married the love of his life, Eleanor. They were happily married for 70 years. Together they raised three daughters.He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; his three daughters; Elaine (Ronald), Yvonne and Lorraine (Samuel); two grandchildren; Sharon and Patrick; two great-grandchildren and various nieces and nephews. His children remember him as a kind, generous and loving father.He was preceded in death by his parents, George Albert and Elizabeth Lottie (Vera) Crowder; his brother, Miles Albert Crowder; and his half-sister, Vera Margaret Blair.George studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Canelo School of Music before his induction into the United States Army in 1942. Sergeant George Crowder was a favorite vocalist of the United States Army 1st Combat Infantry Band. The band toured for the United States Treasury Department; playing such venues as Carnegie Hall and entertaining troops across the United States. He received an honorable discharge in 1945. In 1948, he joined a musical theater group and met his future wife, Eleanor. But it wasn’t until 1956, that he found his calling. He joined the San Francisco Fire Department as a firefighter and retired as a Lieutenant in 1986 after 30 years of service. While still working as a firefighter, George performed in various television shows and movies such as The Streets of San Francisco, Towering Inferno, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Yes, Giorgio. After retirement, George continued performing at various San Francisco Bay Area Senior Centers well into his 90’s.A graveside ceremony is scheduled for December 21, 2018 at 1 PM at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, CA. A reception will follow at Red Lobster in San Bruno, CA. Rev. Richard Bowman will officiate the ceremony.
