Frederick Daniel Lather's Obituary
Oakland, CA - Fred Lather, 78, passed Saturday, June 4, 2022, at Bay Area Healthcare Center in Oakland. He was born May 23, 1944, in Queens, New York City, the son of Frederick Lather II and Theresa Mary Lather.
Fred graduated from Freeport High School, class of 1962. Following high school graduation, he attended New York University and earned his degree in aerospace engineering. He later earned his Master's degree in business with a focus in computer science from the University of Miami. In his career, he worked as an aerospace engineer, a systems analyst, a community college programming instructor, and a substitute high school teacher.
Fred met his wife Janet in the summer of 1978 at a ski club in Oakland where they enjoyed skiing and other sports. They married in 1979 and recently celebrated 43 years of marriage.
In his life, he actively helped those in need; he lent support and friendship to many, brought books to inmates in prison, and gave to charities. After retiring, Fred traveled extensively with Janet. One summer, Fred spent 2 months volunteering to teach introduction to computers to high school students on the Galapagos Islands. Fred loved to swim, scuba dive, and walk.
Surviving him are his wife Janet, daughter Christina Walkup and her husband Thomas Walkup, daughter Jennifer Lather and her husband Brett Bissinger, granddaughter Aurora Walkup, brother Donald Lather and his nephews, niece, and many grandnephews and grandnieces.
A graveside service of remembrance will be held for family and friends at noon on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Skylawn Memorial Park, Hwy 92 at Skyline Blvd, San Mateo, CA, with reception to follow. Guests may gather at the lobby prior to service and follow a processional to the gravesite.
