Eura L. Thomas' Obituary
Eura L. Thomas was born in Memphis, TN on December 22, 1927 to the parents of Amalda and Henry Waller, Sr. Eura was the oldest of five children and her siblings are Henry Jr., Charles, Kenneth and Gloria. She is survived by Charles, who lives in Pacifica with his wife, Jackie.Eura graduated from Booker T. Washington High school at age sixteen. She moved to San Francisco during World War II, and her parents soon followed with the other children. She came by letter from Memphis to Providence Baptist Church, where she was a long time member.She was first married at age 18, and that marriage ended in a divorce a few years later. Eura met her current husband, Adolphus Thomas (Doc) on May 1, 1954. Since that time they were inseparable, as it was love at first sight. They were married the following year.This union was not blessed with the gift of children, but they have helped many nieces and nephews achieve greater goals in life, and still do. Their goddaughter is Leslie Jackson, and she currently resides in Atlanta, GA.Eura’s greatest career success came at the San Francisco Navy shipyard. There she supervised over 30 employees and the Office Copy Center and the mail room. She won a myriad of Superior Accomplishment Awards and was the highest paid woman in the shipyard.Besides her office on base, she maintained an office in Oakland and at Moffett Field, where she spent a half day on Fridays.After the shipyard closed Eura consolidated her offices at the twelfth navel district in San Bruno, Eura retired January 2, 1983.Many San Francisco high school students will remember her for the much assistance she gave them as part of the work study program of the Navy shipyard.Eura was active in several fraternal bodies. She was worthy matron of the Frances A. Tyrrel Chapter order of the Eastern Star; Illustrious Commandress of Thutmose Court #59, Daughters of Isis. Eura helped organize the 3-5-7 Bowling League that propelled her husband to the presidency of the local bowling Association and California State Bowling Association.Eura was also a staunch supporter of the San Francisco chapter of NAACP and she initiated a suit against the federal government to have equal pay scale for all government employees of the same type of job and won.Eura had three hobbies: fishing, bowling, and playing casino machines, as she continued to enjoy them until she had to stop due to her illness.In addition to her husband, brother and goddaughter, she leaves to cherish her memory a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews. Among those who remain closest to her during her more acute illness were Boris Abrahms, Renita Abrahms, Tyron Williams Jr, Ashley Abrahms, Cassandra Waller –Mims and Mrs. Wahrena Williams, her sister-in-law.All of us will miss and never forget Eura’s kind words and endearing smile.
