In 1979, when I learned that my nomination to become a federal judge had been approved by the Senate, one of the very first things I did was call Jeanette, to ask her to be my secretary. Jeanette had been my secretary, beginning in 1966, when I ran the legal aid office in East Palo Alto.
After initially insisting that she was too old to come back to work for me, she finally agreed, to my enormous relief. It was just about the smartest decision I made as a judge. As she had done at the legal aid office, she ran my office with precision and judgement. For generations of my law clerks, she was their "Den Mother", always ready to help them solve their professional or personal problems. During those years we became closer than ever, and I will always be grateful for the compassion, professionalism, and friendship that she Brough to the job, and to me personally. My career would have been markedly different without this wonderful woman by my side.
