Edwin Kim's Obituary
Edwin Park KimSeptember 15, 1925 ' May 27, 2012'Forever In Our Hearts'Edwin 'Ed' Park Kim, born September 15, 1925 at Kapiolani Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii to Sarah Park Kim of Honolulu, Hawaii and Chan Jay Kim of Korea. Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Alene 'Joy' P. Kim, his loving children; Stephanie McKinley (Tom), Gordon Kim (Sabina), of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jeffery Kim (Michele) of Rocklin, California, his brother, Richard Park Kim (Millie) of Vancouver, WA, and his cherished grandchildren; Ryan McKinley, Kyle Kim, Lia Kim, Iwalani Kim, Keanu Kim, Ashley Kim, and Justin Kim. Ed was a resident of Honolulu until 1964. During his early years in Hawaii, Ed and his family (father Chan Jay, Sr., mother Sarah, brother Milton, sister, Rachel, brother, Richard, and brother Chan Jay, Jr.) were locals to the Kamachi area, near Waikiki. Ed could recall the bombing of Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 7, 1941, as he headed out for his paper route at the age of 16. In 1945 Ed was drafted into the Army for the duration of World War II and based in Guam. After his discharge from the service, Ed went on to become a Honolulu Police Detective for 16 years. After coming to the mainland in 1964, Ed worked as a security team member with Oakland Naval Station. During his tenure at the Oakland Naval Station, Ed worked his way up to second in command, retiring from there in 1985. As a long time resident of Hayward, California, Ed had many friends that came to know him through his love of the auction and Oakland flea market (which he worked without fail every weekend for his 'pocket money'). In 2002 Ed and Joy relocated to Rocklin, California to be closer to their son Jeffery, and grandchildren Ashley and Justin. Ed was a doting father and grandfather who was extremely proud of the many accomplishments that each child, and grandchild has made over the years. Ed was made happiest by the simplest of things; time with Joy and his children, watching his grandchildren play sports, working his cross-word puzzles, sitting on the patio having coffee with Joy every morning, watching the birds in his backyard, having lunch out, sitting quietly with his cat on his lap watching television (Fox News, and sports), and relaxing in his easy-chair with his pile of snacks just at arm's length. There are not words that can describe what Ed meant to all of us ' those who loved him. Ed was like a comfortable pair of shoes ' he fit just perfect! It is hard to simply say you will miss someone; there will be a void in our family, a missing link. Our patriarch is gone; the torch will now be passed on, to be held by one of his children. The Kim family will carry on, because that is what he would expect us to do. But our lives will never be the same without him in it. Mr. Kim’s visitation will be on June 4th, 2012 at Skylawn Funeral Home from 11:00am to 3:00pm.
