Edward Lee's Obituary
Edward Lee, 95, passed away peacefully in his home in San Carlos, CA on March 26, 2026.
Edward was born in 1931, in Beijing, China. His early life was shaped by hardship, relocating frequently to survive the turmoil of the Sino Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. He was 17 years old when he escaped to Taiwan. It was there he met Elizabeth, the love of his life where they both graduated from the National Taiwan University.
In 1958, they came to the United States as students, arriving in Baltimore by ship. They pursued graduate studies at the University of Maryland, married in Washington D.C. in 1959, and welcomed their daughters, Eliza in 1960 and Deborah in 1962. Edward first worked at the Sanz Language School and then the US Army Map Service. He spent the next 31 rewarding years with the Department of Defense, where his success culminated in achieving the Senior Executive Service level. In 1992 he received the distinguished Donovan Award honoring his contributions to America’s national security.
Edward cherished his time living and working abroad and the vast friendships he formed all over the world. He took great pride in his work and was especially honored and proud to serve his adopted country.
After retiring in 1997, he moved from the Washington area to California to be close to his two daughters and grandchildren. He organized an ESL class, taught English to new immigrants, and supported veterans organizations, the local library and the senior center. Edward enjoyed reading, gardening, current events, sports and movies. He loved taking in the mountain scenery from home, usually with a beer and chips in hand.
Edward treasured his family above all else, and felt profoundly blessed for the many years spent together in California. He was a model husband, father, grandfather, brother, and true friend. Edward lived a full and meaningful life and was filled with contentment, gratitude and peace at the end. He was admired by all who knew him and will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, calm disposition, and personal integrity.
Edward is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth; his daughter, Debby, and her sons Jordan, Andrew (wife Reagan), and Kevin (along with their father, Stephen Kelleher); and his granddaughter Sarah (along with her father, Chris Kondo). He was predeceased by his daughter, Eliza Lee (Kondo).
Edward will be laid to rest at the Skylawn Memorial Park in Half Moon Bay and a Celebration of Life will be held in mid May in California
