Dorothy June Baker's Obituary
Dorothy June Baker passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 18, 2017 at age 99. She was a resident of San Carlos, CA, for 67 years. Dorothy was born in Colorado Springs, CO, on June 16, 1917. She graduated from Colorado Springs High School at age 15. She received her BS in Chemistry at 19 from University of Denver where she was the president of her sorority, Delta Zeta. After university, she returned home to help run her mother’s boarding house in Colorado Springs. In 1941, a handsome boarder, George “Andy” Baker, caught Dorothy’s eye, and she married him in 1942. The newlyweds soon moved to Juneau, AK, where Dorothy had their first child, Susan. Andy’s career with Pan American World Airways then took them to Seattle, WA, and finally the Bay Area where their two sons, Terry and Randy, were born. Dorothy and Andy raised their family in San Carlos. Dorothy was very active as a homemaker, as a church member, and in community affairs. She was involved in the founding of Trinity Presbyterian Church and served on the church’s first Board of Deacons. She was active in numerous local organizations including PTA, PEO, San Carlos Sister Cities, Junior Matrons, Chicken’s Ball, and others. Dorothy was also a talented seamstress, cook, and folk art painter. She sewed shirts, coats, and dresses for her family and beautiful costumes for the San Carlos Chicken’s Ball. Her cooking was exceptional, particularly her pies, cakes and preserves. Later in life, she mastered Russian Khokhloma painting, which she applied to furniture, trays, tins, and boxes. She was a regular in local art shows. In retirement, Dorothy and Andy traveled to Egypt, Israel, England, and Russia. Dorothy was a graceful woman who was quick to smile and who laughed easily and often. Her talents, compassion, and generosity showed in all that she did. She held a special place in the lives of all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her youngest son, Randy, and Andy, her husband of 66 years. She is survived by her son Terry, his wife Sybil and their daughter Amanda, and also by her daughter Susan, her children, Teresa, Tiffany, and Trevor, his wife Halle and their children Travis and Miracle. There will be a family ceremony where her ashes will be laid to rest with her husband. Friends and community will be welcomed at a Celebration of Dorothy’s Life on February 12 at 1:00 PM at her beloved Trinity Presbyterian Church in San Carlos.
