Doroteo Ng's Obituary
Doroteo Ng, aged 75, of Millbrae passed away peacefully on March 16, 2016 at 4:20 p.m. after a long battle with cancer.Doroteo, known to close friends and family as Teo, was born on March 29, 1940 in Manila, Philippines to Chinese parents Sing Kiat Ng and Ocho Lim. In 1970, Doroteo came to the United States and in 1979 he and his close friends opened Eastwind Books & Arts, the very first Chinese and English language bookstore in the nation and a cultural landmark in the heart of Chinatown in San Francisco.He dedicated his entire life to Eastwind and made it the best and most well-known Chinese American bookstore in the nation. An active Chinese American community member, he was also involved in many community activities promoting U.S. and China relations.On Sept. 9, 1984, he married his wife Winnie Xie, after having met her in San Francisco.Doroteo enjoyed working, being at home and spending time with friends and family, always making sure everyone had a good time and putting others’ well-being first. He was interested in Chinese and Asian arts and languages, and spoke Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Fujianese and Spanish, in addition to English. He also loved sports, movies and Chinese TV programs. He was well respected by his colleagues and friends in the publishing industry domestically and internationally.He is survived by his wife Winnie, daughter Philiana, son Darwin, sister Helen and two brothers Fernando and Genato.A memorial service will be held March 23, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, followed by a dinner reception at Little SiChuan Restaurant, 168 E. 4th Ave. in San Mateo.
