Doris Lavonne Moore's Obituary
Doris Moore, aged 94, of Belmont died at Silverado Memory Care in Belmont on October 17 of natural causes. She was born in rural Indiana to Earl and Alma Amstutz. She grew up on a farm with 5 siblings in a Mennonite community. After earning a private pilot’s license she joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War 2 and served as an Air Traffic Controller.In 1947 she was honorably discharged from the Air Corps/Air Force while she was stationed at Travis Air Base and gained employment with the FAA at SFO. Similarly, Howard Moore had been discharged from the Navy after World War 2 in Oakland. He too, decided not to return to the Midwest. They met at a Western Airlines beach party in 1948 and were married in 1949. After taking several years off to have children, Doris worked as an administrator for the U.S. government and retired in 1992. After 52 years of marriage, Howard died in 2001. They raised 4 children, Cherie, Curt, Mike and Bill.Doris enjoyed art, travel, personal fitness, dance, skiing, tennis and golf. She loved sports and music. She was an avid SF Giants and 49er fan but also frequented the San Francisco Symphony. She was a tireless advocate for her children and volunteered her time as a baseball mom, ballet mom, and served in the booster club for the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps. She loved her grandchildren, Michael, Shannon and Christopher dearly.Doris was quiet and reserved, yet strong willed and persistent. She was a loving mother who demonstrated an abject selflessness. She lived a great life and she will be missed by all that knew her.A memorial service will be held at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo County on November 6th at 11:00am.
