Donald Choy's Obituary
Donald Gee Choy July 29, 1923 – May 25, 2014Donald was born On the High Seas aboard the Taiko Maru, en route from Kwangchou Province, China to San Francisco.He and his two younger brothers and two younger sisters lived with their parents above their sewing factory and grew up a few blocks from Chinatown. Donald graduated from Commerce High School, then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He re-enlisted in the U.S. Army and served through World War II and the Korean War, retiring after 23 years of service. During his service, Donald studied Mandarin at and graduated from the Army Language School at the Presidio of Monterey. He earned the rank of Specialist-7 as a Foreign Liaison Interpreter for Army Intelligence.Donald’s tours of duty included Japan, Taiwan, Monterey/Pacific Grove, Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Panama City.Following retirement from military service, Donald remained actively employed for another 22 years in the civilian sector because he loved being with people.Donald was a remarkable influence on everyone he met. His smile and good humor was infectious, his kindness was ever present, and any person who became his friend had a friend for life.Donald had a life-long passion for bowling, but his favorite pastime was to share good food with family and friends. He is forever loved and missed by everyone he has kept close to his heart for his 90+ years.Donald is predeceased by his wife, Donna, brothers James Choy and Robert Choy, and sister, Lucy Chinn. He is survived by his sister, Anna Loke, daughter, Esther Lee, son, Donald Choy, Jr., grandchildren, Angela Lee and Christopher Lee, and many nieces and nephews.In lieu of flowers, Donald had a special place in his heart for Disabled American Veterans, 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY 41076 www.dav.org
