Clair S. Young's Obituary
September 16, 1924- May 10, 2015Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Elmer and Leah Young.Clair S. Young passed away peacefully on May 10, 2015 after 90 years of a very proud active life. Survived by Betty, is wife of 70 years and sons Robert (Pam) and Gary (Debbie) five grand children, Jennifer (Ryan), Meredyth (Rico), Adam, Chris (Amber), Nick and four great grandchildren, Gianna, Evan, Miles and Owen. Clair was a veteran of World War II serving from 1942-1946. Joined the Army Air Corps at age 17, he trained as an aircraft mechanic and returned home to finish two years of high school and four years at Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. He was hired by the the, Capital Airlines and stationed at Washington National Airport in the District of Columbia. He and Betty and infant son, Robert moved to Alexandria, Virginia. Clair was among the mechanics who transferred to California when Capital merged with United Airlines. In 1967, the family moved to South San Francisco. Clair retired from the United Airlines in 1984. During the 17 years in Virginia, Clair and Betty learned to square dance. Shortly after learning to dance, Clair became a square dance caller. He taught classes for the YMCA and formed three clubs in the area. The club danced performed at the Christmas Pageant of Peace and opened the summer program for the National Park Service for several years. Clair continued his call here in California and formed a group of senior dancers who performed at hospitals, convalescent homes and retirement communities until 1998. Clair also volunteered at the Senior Saturday Brunch program for South San Francisco for ten years. Often driving back from a camping weekend with the Belmont Trailer Club to cook then going back to the campground. Clair became a volunteer with the Peninsula Humane Society as an educator taking his Pugs to San Mateo County schools immediately after retiring. This required giving presentations to Kindergarten through 3rd grade students, regarding responsibility and safety. He and Betty were honored in 1998 for Volunteers of the Year. Along with their volunteer commitments they traveled across the United Stated to see relatives still on the East Coast managing to visit every state except Alaska in their travels. Clair’s hobby was collecting toy trains and every Christmas from 1981 until 2011. Clair and his sons put a display in the front yard for the neighbors and friends. After the holidays the trains were placed back in theirshowcases in the Young’s family room. Family members will gather at Skylawn Funeral Home on May 16, 2015 for the funeral. A celebration of life for friends will be held at a later date.
