He passed away peacefully on January 7, 2014, in Oakland. He and his wife immigrated to the United States in 1990 after his retirement, and he was a long-time resident of San Francisco. Mr. Chu worked all his life as a career diplomat for the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the Taiwanese government, rising up the ranks to become an experienced senior official. He was sent to Japan for two terms, and to South Korea for one. He was fluent in Japanese, and was well-known for his Chinese calligraphy. He loved music, both classical and Chinese; played the er-hu, and enjoyed Beijing opera with his friends throughout his life. Mr. Chu was a devout Christian.
