As children in the ’50s we always looked forward to the summer visits of our California cousins, the Ross family. Grant was always jovial and full of fun. In May of 1963 a friend and I stayed one week with the Ross family as part of a cross-country vacation. Grant and family were amazing hosts who showed us all the famous landmarks in the San Francisco area. He was quite moved when we washed, waxed and polished his ’56 black Pontiac of which he was so proud. Grant enjoyed movie star good looks, a keen intellect and love of debating current world issues. I just heard about Grant’s death. I am the daughter of Grant’s cousin Jessie. She died last summer so I know this is a difficult time. Your husband, father and brother had an impact on me even though I only saw him a few times. I grew up hearing the stories of my mother’s 1950s visit to California in her VW Beetle. Teenage Grant was fascinated by this car and kept imagining ways to turn it into something else like making it look like a wind up toy. Then when i was 8 my parents took us to visit you folks. I finally got to meet the famous Grant and he was just as welcoming to three little kids as he’d been to his cousin years earlier. Many years later Grant came to visit us in Canada and I got to know him a little bit more. I watched the care he took in talking with my grandparents and I enjoyed his stories. For years I’ve wanted to make a return visit to California and see everyone again. I waited too long to see Grant. I hope he and my mother are having a great reunion and that all of you will soon be able to remember the man he was for most of his life. Love your cousin, Carolyn
