Kun Chang Liao Wu's Obituary
Kun Chang Liao Wu passed away peacefully on August 31, 2019 surrounded by her loving family after courageously battling oral cancer for the past four years. She was born in Nantou, Taiwan on March 12, 1934, the 4th child of 7 children. Her parents were land and business owners. Mrs. Wu grew up in Nantou and Taichung and went to Taichung Commercial High School. In 1955, she met an English teacher, Peter Shung Wu , who would become her husband. 5 years later, they had 4 lovely and caring daughters: Chunju (Jun), Pinju (Cindy), Jingju (Shizue), and Wenju (Fumie).Due to political oppression by the KMT party and economic hardship in Taiwan during the mid-1960s, Mrs. Wu and her husband uprooted their family and immigrated to Japan. It was not easy for her to start all over again, having to learn a new language, a new culture, and getting a new job to support her husband and family. But her inner strength helped the family persevere through tough times and her entrepreneurial spirit helped lift her family’s economic situation. After her husband Peter passed away in 1996, she made another bold decision—to move to the U.S. Again, she took on the challenge of learning a new language and new culture. And she thrived at City College of San Francisco at age of mid 60s, meeting so many fellow students that would become life-long friends.Above all, she always think of others first before herself. Whether it be helping others who were new immigrants like herself or giving marriage advice to those who sought her wisdom, she worked tirelessly to contribute to other people’s happiness. At this memorial service, we celebrate her life and her final wish that her 4 daughters, her sons-in-law Allen, Calvin, Shinya (pre-deceased), and Hidekazu, and also her grandchildren, Jeffrey, Terence, Christopher, Perris, and Emma, carry on the family value of contributing to other people’s happiness.
