Dr. Carol Josselyn's Obituary
Dr. Carol Josselyn passed away peacefully on August 30, 2019 at her home in Belmont, CA after a long and courageous battle with cancer.Carol was born in Alhambra, CA and raised in South Pasadena until the family moved to Eagle Rock where she attended Eagle Rock Junior and Senior High Schools, graduating in 1966. After graduation, Carol attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland for a year before returning to Los Angeles and completing her undergraduate work in Theater at Occidental College in 1971. This was followed by a master’s degree from the University of Southern Illinois, Carbondale, in 1973. Carol then moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington (UW) and begin work on her PhD. She spent a year in Ashland Oregon, in between graduate work, teaching at Southern Oregon State College before returning to Seattle to complete her Dissertation (on Noh Theater) and receiving her PhD in Speech Communication from the UW in 1981.After her PhD Carol took a position as Ombudsman’s at the University of Washington for several years, but the call to the classroom and teaching soon led her to accept a faculty position in 1988 in the Speech Communication Department at Foothill College in Mountain View, CA. Carol was a popular professor who inspired and befriended many both in school and in life. She became a tenured faculty member in 1992 and taught for 30 years at Foothill before retiring in 2018. Carol loved her career and teaching, including her colleagues who are near and dear to her. Carol was an independent thinker, both intelligent and generous, who showed amazing courage in the face of physical adversity that was truly inspirational. Her love for travel and adventure led Carol many places over the course of her life but it was her love of the ocean and being at the beach that was unsurpassed and her most cherished destination.Carol is survived by her brothers David and Thomas and her devoted friend and caregiver Roger. Memorial service is September 18, 2019 at 11 am at Skylawn Funeral Home in San Mateo. In lieu of flowers please give to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
