Calvin Douglas Vierth's Obituary
Calvin Douglas Vierth, 96, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2015 at 4 pm in his home in Redwood City, CA., after a short illness. He was surrounded by his family. He was born on May 6, 1919 in Stockton, CA to Henry F and Frances E Vierth. He grew up and attended school in Modesto, CA, graduating from Modesto High School and Modesto Jr College.Cal and his brother and best friend, Clifford, went to flying school at the Modesto Airport and got their pilots licenses. The first person they each took up as a passenger in the open air bi-plane was their mother. She always said she was scared to death but didn’t let on to them. He and his brother joined the National Guard then he had a career with Pan American World Airways for 45 years. Pan Am was first located on Treasure Island before moving to San Francisco International Airport. Those were the days that they had planes such as The M-130 – The Flying Boat, “The China Clipper”, “Tin Goose”, “The Clipper America” (which made the first Round-the-World flight in 1947). He traveled the world with Pan Am. Calvin was an avid hunter and fisherman. He took many deep sea fishing trips to Mexico with his father. Every year there was pack trip to Kennedy Meadows to deer hunt and trout fish with friends and his sons. Duck hunting was his love and continued to do so until recently. He loved to ride his bicycle and rode to Starbucks every day until he was 95 years old. Attending garage sales was also a passion of his. On June 27, 1942 Calvin married Alice Ann Stewart. They lived in Oakland, CA on Lake Merritt and in 1944 Douglas Clifford was born. They then moved to S. San Francisco and Millbrae where in 1950 Calvin Allen was born. In 1952 they bought a brand new home in Redwood City where they raised their sons and lived until passing. Cal and his brother, Clifford, were very close. In 1942, Clifford was MIA out of Hickam Field, HI. He was a pilot transporting other pilots to the Philippines. It was assumed that their plane met up with the Japanese and was shot down. The family never got over the loss. Now Cal has reunited with his beloved brother.Calvin is survived by: Son, Douglas Clifford Vierth, Shirley Vierth (daughter-in-law), Lisa Vierth (grand-daughter), Douglas M Vierth (grandson), Sean Vierth (great grandson); Son, Calvin Allen Vierth, Jean Vierth (daughter-in-law), Laura Vierth (grand-daughter).The service details are private
