Calvin Joe's Obituary
Calvin Joe, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away in the early morning hours of April 13, 2018 with his wife, son, and daughter at his side.Calvin (Cal) was born in San Mateo on September 17, 1950 to Harry and Suey King Joe. He attended St. Matthew’s Catholic School, San Mateo High, class of ’69, and the College of San Mateo. He retired in 2010 from Applera (formerly Applied Biosystems) as an IT Systems Analyst. He was a member of Church of the Nativity in Menlo Park, San Mateo Masons Lodge #226, and San Mateo Elks Lodge #1112.Cal and his wife, Mary, were married for 43 years and raised a son, Jeffrey, and daughter, Martha.Prior to and during his retirement, Cal continued to stay busy. He loved fishing, gardening, wood working, traveling, and watching old classic movies. His involvement with the San Mateo Masonic Lodge afforded him the opportunity of community involvement helping others. Additionally, he loved road trips to visit family and historical sites in Austin, Boston, and Philadelphia,Cal also enjoyed cooking for family and friends. He loved to bar-b-que and try new recipes. He also smoked salmon on his bar-b-que. It was common to find him cooking the main course of holiday family dinners while Mary did the side dishes and desserts.His pride and joy, however, was his family. He relished every minute he spent with them. Cal leaves behind is wife, Mary, son, Jeffrey (Betty), daughter, Martha (Steven) Vokes, and three grandchildren, Alexander, Hannah, and Adelynn, He will be missed by cousins, nieces and nephews as well as many friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Suey King and Harry Joe, as well as his stepmother, Sui Lan Joe.Services will be held on Friday, April 27, at Church of the Nativity, 210 Oak Grove Avenue, Menlo Park. Visitation from 9:00AM with Mass following at 10:00AM. Interment will be at Skylawn Memorial Park, San Mateo.
