Betty V. Athens' Obituary
Betty V. Athens – January 26th 2019. Betty, or as some called her, “Vasho”, grew up part of a vibrant Greek community in Oakland at a time when the Pittsburgh Pirates played baseball down the street. She was a proud graduate of Schenley High School and even into her late years could break into the fight song of her “Dear Schenley High.” Betty was married to Nicholas G. Athens, who died many years before her and whose memory she often invoked. She is also the grandmother of Jim, Christin, Kate, Maisie, and Louise and recently became great-grandmother to Harriet (Hattie); she is also survived by her sister, Demetra (Mitzie) Andrews; as well as her children, Maria, George (Ellen), Tom (Deborah), and Jim (Kip); and niece, Maria. Betty will always be remembered for her keen eye for fashion, deep compassion, good humor and bouncing in the waves of Ocean City New Jersey withany of her willing grandchildren. She will be laid to rest at Nick’s side on a hill outside of San Francisco overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
