Bernice Suiping Law-Leung's Obituary
Bernice SiuPing Law-Leung, MD passed away peacefully in Hillsborough, CA on June 7, 2022. She was born in Hong Kong to Mr. Hoi Law and Mrs. So-Ching Lo Law on November 15, 1954. She is survived by her husband, James Leung; her son, Timothy Leung; her sisters, Virginia Lee and Eva Kwan and her brother, Sebastien Law.
Bernice grew up in Hong Kong. She went to St Stephen's Girls College during her primary and secondary school years. She was very proud of her school and she not only excelled academically, but also in extracurricular activities such as serving in the student association, and as prefect in her class. She was a member of the school volleyball, basketball, and track and field teams.
In 1972, she got accepted into the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and in 1973, she was awarded a scholarship to attend the World Campus Afloat, a floating university that offers classes on board a ship that takes her traveling around the world.
That year of travel study opened up her perspective to the world outside of that tiny Hong Kong Island and when that year of study on board ended, she decided to move to the US to continue her study. She graduated from Cal State University Los Angeles and was accepted to Medical School in UC San Francisco. In 1981, after she received her MD degree from UC San Francisco, she joined the diagnostic radiology residency program in Mallinckrodt/Washington University in St Louis. Following the completion of the program there, she went on for another year of fellowship program in Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, specializing in Pediatric Radiology. In June 1986, she started her practice in San Francisco as a Pediatric Radiologist with California Pacific Medical Center, California Campus and stationed there until she retired in December 2019.
In 1986, she was married to the love of her life, James Leung, and in 1993, Timothy Leung was born to the family.
Since her college years, Bernice had been a fervent Christian and very diligent in attending church, bible studies, and small group activities. In 1997, during a short- term Medical Mission trip to Szechuan, China, God laid it on Bernice’s heart to share the gospel with her fellow Chinese citizens. In the years to follow, it was difficult for her to commit to a longer-term mission in China due to her family obligations and career in the US and the changing political environment in China. Later on, she discovered that one did not have to go to China to minister to the Chinese population. In the San Francisco Tenderloin district alone, there are thousands of elderly Chinese speaking residents longing to hear the gospel. Starting in 2011, Bernice and James joined the SF City Impact Adopt-A-building program in ministering to the elderly Chinese community. For nine years, Bernice derived a lot of satisfaction caring and ministering to the elderly Chinese who lived in the Tenderloin.
Although her life on earth was brief, we all know that she lived life to the fullest and did her best to serve the Lord. We all miss her and love her.
A memorial service will be held at Skylawn Memorial Park on July 7, 2022, at 10:30 AM. Burial Service to follow immediately after the memorial service.
In lieu of sending flowers, the family wishes that a donation be made in memory of Bernice Law-Leung to: SF City Impact, 136 Taylor St, San Francisco, CA 94102 (415)292-1770, Website: sfcityimpact.com
