Arthur J. McPadden Jr.'s Obituary
Arthur J. McPadden Jr.passed away on March 28, 2013, surrounded by family. He was 85 years old. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Arthur and Jane McPadden, Arthur was the oldest of six children: Rita Harrington (married to Richard), Robert (deceased), Raymond (married to Norma), John (married to Lynn), and William (married to Lillian). He was the beloved husband to Carol V. McPadden for over 56 years, and loving father to four children: Arthur (married to Andrea), Carl (married to Teri), Carolyn Galliani (married to William), and Paul. He was blessed with eight grandchildren: Arthur, Alyssa, Madison, Miranda, Mary Colleen, Robert, Patrick, Michelle, along with three step-grandchildren, Conor, Katie, and Quinn, as well as many precious nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.After graduating from Central High School of Bridgeport, Arthur attended University of Connecticut from 1946-1947 before serving for two years as a U.S.army sergeant stationed in Japan from 1948-1949. While working two jobs, Arthur attended Lafayette College, was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and graduated in 1951, Summa Cum Laude. In 1951, Arthur received the Connecticut Medical Society Scholarship and attended medical school at the University of Vermont where he graduated in 1955, He was a member of Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity. After an Internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport Connecticut in 1956, Arthur completed his residency in pediatrics and earned a fellowship in endocrinology at Philadelphia Children’s Hospital from 1957 to 1959.After three years of private practice in Bridgeport, Arthur moved to Los Altos Hills, California in 1962, with his bride Carol and young family, to become a member of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group. “Art,” or “Mac” as he was also known, was a beloved Kaiser pediatrician for 37 years and was honored as the “Outstanding Physician of 1990.” Throughout his career, Arthur was a member of the California Medical Society, the Irish American Pediatric Society and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.In 1999, Arthur retired from Kaiser and moved near the ocean to Half Moon Bay, California. Arthur was devoted to his wife and family above all else. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He was a wonderful patriarch who loved unconditionally. He was a beautiful role model and a selfless person. He lived life with unbridled enthusiasm. The joy he shared and the stories he told will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially his family.A memorial celebration is planned for April 13, 2013 at 12 noon, Skylawn Memorial Park. Private interment. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Philadelphia Children’s Hospital Foundation where his career as a pediatrician began.
