Tita Cely was my mother-in-law’s cousin. I will always cherish the memories of diminutive and smiling Tita Cely who had a zest for life which we shared during our Meditteranean cruise, the crazy drive to San Giovanni and meandering around Rome. Mama was her partner in crime. Yes, she was small but she accomplished a lot on her own and she was able to bring her tribo to the United States. She created an oasis in busy San Mateo with her fruit trees and flowers in her beautiful garden. Tita generously shared not only her fruits but one day surprised me with a beautiful bundle of my favorite lavender flowers tied with a lavender ribbon. Very sweet. Mama is 93 years old and has been calling several times to reminisce her time with Tita Cely. Till we all meet again. - chuchi constantino

Hi La,

I hope that wherever you are, (heaven, hell, maybe reincarnated?) that you're having a good time with your plants and those random dreams you always have. Thanks for teaching me how to cook, passing along the traveling genes, and for showing me what a strong, independent woman (who really don't need no man) looks like. I'll be passing along stories of you down the generations so don't worry - future Cepedas will know all about the hot gossip you used to tell us. Hope you're having a good ol' time, wherever you are and that you're still going on adventures. I'll see you in a couple decades!

Dear Lola,

I want to say thank you for always supporting me and making sure that I had every opportunity to succeed. I remember spending most of my summers with you in San Mateo and spending time going to the mall, gardening, or walking around. You were there for a lot of my most important moments growing up. From taking me to classes at the college in San Mateo to attending my high school graduation, I could always count on you being there in support. I love and miss you very much Lola. I'm sad that we don't get to eat ramen together anymore, but I know you're happy and at peace. Thank you for helping shape who I am and who I'll become. I hope to continue to make you proud. Rest well Lola.

I met Tita Cely when my Nanay Baby (sister of my mom) married her brother Tatay Oscar. My Nanay Baby and Tatay Oscar had four children and I grew up and spent vacations with them in Pasay. I remember Lola Tanching , Tita Astie, and Tito Melo as well. The Cepeda’s welcomed our whole family when we moved to the US and became part of their family as well. Although, not much time was spent with each other the relationship never fades. The relationship grew much stronger when two of my cousins Dan and Susa decided to move in the US. Tita Cely is a warm, giving, independent, and happy person. She took care of her mom (Lola Tanching) without reservation and complaint and I do believe that if you care for your family, the gestures you give will be given back to you, and that was given back to her by Dan and Veron’s family. She never forgets to mail us persimmons every harvest time and calls and ask how my mom and dad are doing. Thank you for making me feel as your niece and part of your family even though I am not a Cepeda. Your laugh and smile will be missed and will never forget your kindness. Rest and be at peace. We will always love and remember you.

Thank you Miss Celi for making our family feel so welcome. We didn't have any family nearby when we moved to San Mateo, but you showed us so much kindness and helped us feel at home here. Thank you for spoiling our boys with sweets. We will miss seeing you in the garden on sunny days and chatting with you. Rest in peace, we will miss you and we will never forget you. met Celi in the 80s when we both worked for the phone company in an office at Burlingame. In late 90s, the company consolidated and moved all the offices in our area to San Ramon. She retired and devoted her time in taking care of her mother.

As Celi lived close by my house, periodically I would visit her to exchange daily events. She would tell me her cruises with friends to Mexico, and her traveling to Israel.

She was an excellent gardener. She grew the most beautiful roses, and cymbidiums. Sometime I would benefit with those blossoms. I personally enjoyed a lot of harvest from her fruit trees, persimmons, avocados and Chinese pears. During Christmas time, we exchanged gifts. Mine would be product from the stores, but hers would be delicious home made goodies.
I am so grateful for the true and lasting friendship that we shared year after year. Rest in peace Celi.

I will miss you.
