Annie Tan's Obituary
Annie Tan, aged 93, originally of Rangoon, Burma and a resident of San Francisco, California, passed away on January 12, 2017. She was born July 23, 1923 in Rangoon as an only child to Chiu Chin Tye and Gwat Eng Tan. She married Choo Keng Tan in 1941 and immigrated to the United States in 1971. Annie was a thoroughly modern woman. She was musical; she loved to sing and played the saxophone in the Wah Im Sha band, alongside Choo Keng, who played the clarinet. She operated the Venus Beauty Salon, which for 18 years was a popular and fashionable salon in Rangoon, favored by many actresses and the foreign diplomatic corps. She herself was always well coiffed, with perfect makeup and manicured nails to match, and she made sure her daughters followed suit! She had a gift for languages, which was valuable as a teacher at the Chinese school in Rangoon and in her 17-year career at San Francisco’s Chinatown Public Health Clinic. She loved good food and soap operas, and was also known to enjoy a trip or two to a casino and spend considerable hours admiring jewelry. Annie is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Choo Keng Tan, and loving son, Raymond Tan. She is survived by her loving children, Eng Eng Ng, Selwyn Tan, Benny Tan, Kwan Kwan Wang, Kyin Kyin Chew, and Alfred Tan and their spouses, 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren, who will miss her dearly. She is also remembered by countless other family and friends whom she touched with her warmth and great humor.
