Amulakh Shah's Obituary
Amulakh Shah passed away on May 23, 2026 at the age of eighty-eight. He had a life unmistakably led with love, innovation, and devotion to family and friends. He is survived by his daughter Vaishali as well as grandchildren Viraj and Suvali.
He was married for fifty-three years to Kusum Shah, who passed away in 2020. They lived in Woodside, Queens for over fifty years, supporting friends and family who moved or visited from India. They were deeply involved in their communities, and Amul was a leader in founding the Jain Center of New York and the Siddhachalam ashram. He was awarded the Jain Ratna Award, the highest honor for his faithful contributions.
He was born July 31, 1937 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat and grew up in the Mumbai suburb of Ghatkopar as the oldest of five children. He first came to America in 1961 for his master’s in engineering from the University of Notre Dame. Upon returning to India he worked to design the country’s first air conditioning in trains.
He then immigrated to New York City with his wife and young daughter and was an avid entrepreneur. Amul Shah founded a successful travel business and an entertainment company, where he produced television shows and brought Bollywood’s biggest stars to Madison Square Garden. He later focused on the stock market as well as designed and constructed convenience stores for his family.
Later in life he traveled around the world, always full of adventure and curiosity. He was passionate about being up to date on current affairs and was always very social.
He is deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
