Allan McCulloch Campbell's Obituary
Born in Berkeley, CA. Pre-deceased by his parents, Virginia (nee Henning) Campbell and Lindsay Campbell, and his brother Bruce Campbell. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Alice del Campillo Campbell of Stanford, CA; daughter Wendy Nelson (spouse Steven Nelson) of Mountain View, CA; son Joseph Campbell (spouse Ann Corsi) of Kensington, MD; and 5 grandchildren (Andrew, Eli, and Ray Nelson, and Theodore and Grace Campbell).Allan Campbell received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of California-Berkeley. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Illinois, working in the Department of Microbiology under the mentorship of Sol Spiegelman. Soon after receiving his doctoral degree, he served for two years in the military.Allan worked for decades as a microbiologist and geneticist. Following several years at the University of Rochester, he joined the faculty of Stanford University in 1968, where he was appointed to the Barbara Kimball Browning endowed chair in 1992 and remained an emeritus professor after retiring. During his academic career he mentored several scientists who went on to have successful careers as independent researchers. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition, he received honorary degrees from the University of Rochester and the University of Chicago, and in 2004 he received the Abbott-ASM Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Microbiology. He served for many years as Editor of the Annual Review of Genetics.He enjoyed traveling, with favorite destinations including Alaska, Sedona, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; gardening; attending opera; and hiking. He was known in his neighborhood for his daily bike rides to his laboratory. He was a loving father, grandfather, and husband. He and his wife Alice raised their two children in Rochester, NY and Stanford, CA.Allan met Alice while she was earning her PhD in biochemistry at the University of Michigan, and they worked side by side in the laboratory for more than 50 years.Allan will be deeply missed by his family, neighbors, friends, and colleagues.A memorial service for Allan is set for Saturday, July 21, at 2 pm, at First Presbyterian Church of Mountain View, 1667 Miramonte Avenue, Mountain View, CA. A reception will follow the service.
