ALICE DEL CAMPILLO CAMPBELL (1928 – 2019)Alice del Campillo Campbell passed away on November 26, 2019 at age 91. Born on May 30, 1928, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Alice was an excellent student who graduated from high school at age 15. She then went to Barnard College, majoring in chemistry, followed by working and obtaining a master’s at New York University, and ultimately earning a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Michigan. She married a fellow scientist, the late Allan McCulloch Campbell, in 1958, and they spent the first year of their marriage in Paris working in biology labs. After moving back to the United States, they collaborated in biology labs at the University of Rochester (1959 – 1968) and Stanford University (1968 – 2016). Once their children Wendy and Joseph came along in the early 1960s, Alice worked part-time , first as a research associate and later as a senior research associate. In addition to being fluent in three languages (Spanish, English, and French), she was a member of Sigma Xi and the American Chemical Society. Always curious and an engaging conversationalist, Alice was described by one of the many graduate students and post-docs who passed through the Campbell lab as “the life of the lab.”Alice enjoyed travelling, attending the San Francisco Opera, following Giants baseball, and cooking dishes she had sampled in her travels.
