Adrian Alfred Cohn's Obituary
Adrian died peacefully at home at age 93 on November 24, 2015. Born in Chicago, he spent most of his life in California, the past 50 years in San Mateo. He had a passion for teaching and co-authored five college textbooks., Adrian retired at age 88 from the College of San Mateo where he taught English for 47 years and helped create the campus Writing Center. He also loved newspapers and early in his career considered becoming a career journalist. His first employment when he moved to California in 1952 was as Associate Publisher of the Livermore News, a newspaper that is still in existence today. He received his undergraduate degrees and PhD from the University of Wisconsin and served in the Air Force in the Pacific during WWII. He is a decorated veteran having received both the Purple Heart and Air Medal.Family and friends fondly remember his kindness, keen sense of humor, and love of good food and wine, as well as his love of travel.He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Barbara, daughter Sara, son Simon and his wife Janet, grandson Jonathan and his wife Jaimie Baron, granddaughter Rebecca, and great grandson Kai. A memorial service on Thursday, December 3, 11:30 AM will be at Skylawn Funeral Home, Highway 92 at Skyline Drive, San Mateo. Donations in his honor may be sent to the San Mateo Community College Foundation, 3401 CSM Drive, San Mateo, CA 94402.
