Jerome William Mertens
January 5, 1936 - September 5, 2021
Jerome William Mertens, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Each and every one of his 85 years was lived win faith, charity, joy, laughter, love and without regret. His abundant generosity and quiet, unconditional love were shared everyday with his devoted wife of 65 years, Karen; son Greg; daughters Debbie and Lauri; and his greatest joy - his grandchildren: Jamie, Stephanie, Scott, Gregory and great grandson Colton. He was a passionate football player, playing at Drake University and with the San Francisco 49ers. He dedicated his post professional career to the NFL Alumni association, serving as president for 10 years. His charity was focused on children, holding annual charity events through the NFL Caring for Kids program. He was adored by all his friends and the community through numerous activities, including dominos, fishing, golfing, going out to eat, attending Mass at St. Pius and of course football. All looked to him for guidance, support and love, usually when he had a fishing rod in hand or while tending to the fireplace. The friendship and love he shared with so many people served as an example for us all. He loved spending time with family in Lake Tahoe and the Grand Tetons over a meal of seafood or steak. We are so grateful that we were able to share a life with him. He will be missed greatly, but will be remembered joyfully through countless, cherished memories and stories. He touched many lives in many ways. He lives in all of us. A blessed life, a blessed man. “Touchdown, 49ers!”
