Dr. Anitha Toke, Professor of Medicine at UCSF, passed away surrounded by her loved ones in San Carlos, CA on September the 17th. She was only 55. Memorial services will be held at Skylawn Memorial Park on September 22nd (Wednesd Read Obituary
Anitha is one of my most dear and treasured colleagues and a good friend. With her amazing wit and warm demeanor, she would inevitably cut right to the heart of the matter for any issue. She is a gifted clinician, a wise educator, and a fierce advocate. The world is a bit dimmer without Anitha here to provide her light.

Dr. Toke was an inspiring doctor to trainees and colleagues alike. She was an impressive clinician, always making rare diagnoses without a sweat, completely unflappable, and with a great sense of humor.
She improved the lives of thousands of patients and her influence lives on in those she trained. Her passing is a great loss to the UCSF community and she will be greatly missed.
Anitha Toke was a valued clinician and colleague at UCSF. She was highly respected for her clinical expertise and compassion among her patients, trainees and colleagues. Her dedication to her family and the joy she shared about her children were clear. I send my sincerest heartfelt condolences to her family.
Thank you for a beautiful remembrance. I was lucky enough that Anitha's son, Aarya was one of my son's best friends. She was always so good and generous to Andrzej and it was wonderful when our own friendship deepened. I will miss her honest opinions, generous smile, and laughter about raising kids.
Anitha was like a big sister to my sister and me, even though we were cousins. Visiting her and Babu in India was always the highlight of the trip and I remember it so fondly. Having her here in California, made our relationship that much stronger. Reading everyone's stories about her only solidifies the impact she had on everyone she came into contact with. What she did with her short time on earth was astounding and I am thankful to hear everyone's love-filled remembrances of her. To say I am saddened by her loss is an understatement. She was quick to smile and laugh, and I will truly miss her at our family gatherings. The last thing I said to her was "You've got this. We've got you". Even though she didn't beat the disease, we've still got her. Always will.
I feel like Anitha was a sister to me, even though I met her so few times. She was very helpful throughout my treatment. She was both compassionate and clinical when she reached out. Her courage and steadfast attitude gave me so much strength during a difficult time! She called KC several times to check on me, and offered such good advise. KC and I also remember how proud she was for her sons’ thread ceremony and all the wonderful dinners at Dev and her place. May her soul rest in peace.
Remembering her wonderful and gentle soul will forever remain in our hearts. May she rest in peace!

July 2017, at the party following Arav/Arya’s ceremony, carefree and joyous, dancing with Deb, that’s how I wish to remember Anita.
But I cannot forget the last time we met her, just about a month ago. You could see it on her face, she knew she did not have much time. She was never one to talk about herself; this time was no different. Rather, she was making plans for Arav and Arya.
Four of us sat in the living room, the one with the plush sofas and Deb’s gigantic sound system. So many parties over the years. Anita’s delicious culinary creations.
We left within the hour. Anita came out to the balcony to see us off.
She was one of the most caring and thoughtful of my friends. That last time we met, she recalled some obscure detail about my Dad’s condition from fourteen years ago. She was friend and counselor when my family needed her help. Ruhi and I will miss her, terribly. May her soul rest in peace. And may her sons live happy lives. And to Deb, my friend, my deepest condolences.
With our deepest condolences to Aditya, the kids, and the Mukherjee and Toke families. I regretfully was out of touch with Anitha for the last while, but we worked together for several years when she first moved to ZSFG. I still remember her smile and her sense of humor as she bravely, adeptly, and compassionately cared for her patients. She taught me about how to transition from a fellow to an attending and for that I am always grateful. She and your family will be in our hearts, minds, and prayers during this difficult time.
