Mr. Mercedes Aurelio Fletes

June 16, 1922 - May 20, 2022

Mercedes Aurelio Fletes Solano was "el comiche," the youngest of 8, husband of Estella with whom he reunites, father of 8, grandfather of 20, great grandfather of 21, and great great grandfather of 1. He lived and survived through events that most only read about in books. He was born in 1922, grew up as a child during the Great Depression, helped build the roads that connect Nicaragua, survived earthquakes, political unrest, authoritarian/communist regimes, countless presidents, and of course a world pandemic. He was a "roble" - an oak tree. He was strong and stubborn but sweet in his own ways. You knew he liked you if he gave you a few dollars and asked why you hadn't left for work yet. While he wasn't a hugger, we all felt the love he had for us. Whether near or far, he was always happy to hear that his grandkids were doing well, that they were growing, studying and working towards their better future. He literally paved the way for us along with grandma, and to honor him is to continue on that road of improvement. While we will miss his physical presence, he is in a better place and always with us in spirit and in our hearts. Mercedes Aurelio Fletes Solano era el menor de 8 hijos, esposo de Estela, con quien se reúne, padre de 8, abuelo de 20, bisabuelo de 21 y tatarabuelo de 1. El sobrevivió cosas de las que sólo aprendimos en libros. El nació en 1922, creció durante La Gran Depresión, trabajo construyendo los caminos en Nicaragua, sobrevivió terremotos, disturbios políticos, regímenes comunistas/autoritarios, más presidentes de los que se pueden contar y por su puesto una pandemia mundial. El era un roble, era fuerte, terco, pero dulce en su propia manera, sabias que le caíste bien si te daba un poco de dinero y preguntaba porque no te habías ido al trabajo. Aunque no era mucho de abrazos se sentía el amor que tenia por todos nosotros, estuviéramos cerca o lejos, el siempre quería saber y se ponía feliz al escuchar que estamos creciendo, estudiando y/o trabajando hacia un futuro mejor. Junto a su esposa y nuestros padres hicieron el camino para nosotros y la mejor manera de honrarlos a todos es continuar en ese camino de mejoría. Aunque nos hace falta su presencia física, el siempre está con nosotros en espíritu y en nuestros corazones.
