Dr. Margaret "Lucy" Wong
September 6, 1981 - August 13, 2021
After over a year-long journey battling cancer, Dr. Margaret (Lucy*) Wong sadly passed away on August 13, 2021 surrounded by family and friends, just a few weeks shy of her 40th birthday. Margaret was born September 6, 1981 to Ken and Evon in Fremont, CA, where she attended Brookvale Elementary School, Thornton Jr. High School, and American High School. After being the top student in almost every sense, she went on to get her Bachelors and Masters degrees at MIT in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, where she met her husband Joe. During the wedding planning process, she found a gap in online resources and started a company with Joe called Project Wedding, which paved the way for crowd sourcing information in the wedding industry before the days of Yelp. After their startup success, Margaret decided to pivot in her career because she wanted to do something she felt would be more tangibly meaningful, especially after her involvement in Make-A-Wish. And so she went on to UCSF Medical School and then the Stanford Radiology Residency Program, and was preparing for a one-year fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in May 2020. While Margaret's accomplishments were many, her true legacy is in the relationships she made throughout her short life. She was a fiercely loyal friend and advocate for the people she loved, and inspired others to live out the same drive, ambition, and work ethic that she exemplified. She had incredible empathy for both her loved ones and her patients, and always invested time and thought without being asked. She also knew how to enjoy time spent with others through good food, music, travel, and the simple pleasures of daily life. Margaret is survived by her husband Joe, her son Isaac, and her dog Beyonce. She also had another furry friend named Bonnie, who she loved dearly and passed away in 2019. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Skylawn in San Mateo, CA to celebrate her life and legacy. Due to COVID safety precautions, the in-person service will be limited to invited guests only, and there will be a livestream available for those who would like to attend virtually. Friends of the family have also set up a GoFundMe page to contribute to funeral expenses for those who would like to donate. https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-lucys-family *While Margaret is her legal name, she is also known as Lucy by her family, which is a nickname taken from the Peanuts cartoon that each of the Chongs has.
