Willie Kwok Wai Chan passed away on the morning of Thursday, May 31, 2018. He was born in Guangzhou, China to the late Lun Chan and Yu Ying whom he now joins in heaven along with his older brother, Henry Chan. He is survived by many loved ones including his life partner, Gloria Li, children, Kerry, Jason, Kara, Karen, and Kevin, his younger brother, Roger, and sister, Stephanie, and his ex-wife, Fai Chan.
Willie had an incredible journey of survival and accomplishment. Beginning in his youth, Willie successfully swam from China to Hong Kong, four hours in the dark ocean waters. In Hong Kong he joined his father’s business. While top of his class in school, his academics were cut short due to the Cultural Revolution. Education was replaced with innate survival skills and common sense. He taught himself how to cook and had the ability to bring people together with his love of food. He would be the undeniable patriarch of his family, leading relatives to America and guiding them throughout their lives.
Willie was a passionate and dedicated man who lived life to the fullest. A charismatic and boisterous leader. His awesome energy was infectious and his work ethic was formidable. Even into retirement age he could still play two hours of badminton, another few hours of golf, then head to the produce market to buy food and cook a family meal. He loved being in the kitchen, making elaborate Canton dinners and being surrounded by family and good friends. He savored every moment.
He believed in giving your personal best and always encouraged people to push the boundaries.
He is loved by many and will be missed.
