冼小棠先生生平

冼小棠先生, 祖籍广东省南海县西樵镇,于1962年4月2日在浙江省杭州市妇幼保健院出生,父冼棠超,母周家龄。其为家中长子,下有弟冼小东、妹周嵘。他自幼在杭州护士学校大院长大。三岁入浙江医科大学附属幼儿园。于1970年2月至1976年7月在杭州市刀茅巷小学就读。并于1976年9月入读杭州市第七中学,至1980年7月高中毕业。他性格内向平和。好美食,糖醋排骨是其拿手菜。青少年时期,喜爱各种体育运动,包括乒乓球、篮球、单杠、双杠、游泳、象棋,尤其对围棋情有独钟。在杭州护士学校的大操场、健身房,在碧波荡漾的贴沙河里,都留有他欢快的身影。中学时对数学着迷,每每在数学的海洋里流连忘返,不忍自拔。常参加数学竞赛,并屡有斩获。同时,物理也是其所长。于1980年秋考入浙江大学机械系精密机械专业,并于1984年夏获得机械工程学士学位。毕业后,就职于杭州照相机厂,任助理工程师。

1985年夏赴美,入读俄亥俄州阿克隆大学工程学院,并于1988年6月获得机械工程硕士学位。1988年9月再读圣塔克拉拉大学,于1990年6月获计算机科学硕士学位。在将近三十年的职业生涯中,他先后就职于湾区多个高科技公司,如Fujitsu, Toshiba, Siemens Acuson, Hewlett Packard, eBay等. 1998年至2011年他也曾任教于西北理工大学,担任计算机系教授。2000年冼小棠先生归化为美国公民。

1991年在湾区结识现在的太太应婷。 并于1992年在圣塔克拉拉大学的天主教礼堂步入婚姻殿堂,牵手二十六载。 1995年大女儿Shanel出生, 1998年小儿子Thomas出生。他热爱家庭,夫妻和睦,关爱子女,热爱美食,热爱工作。每年全家都会留出一个月时间回中国探亲,或游历世界各地山川。他对子女的教育非常重视,亲自辅导孩子们的功课,特别是数学,使孩子们在学业上受益良多。

2011年6月冼小棠先生中风后查出罹患第4期癌症。当时他的主治医生认为他的生命期可能不超过六个月。但他积极和医生配合,接受各种复健,治疗,终于在2013年得到了良好的控制。在他生病期间,仍坚持每年回中国探望父母,以尽孝道。

2017年夏,冼小棠先生旧病复发。时年9月开始化疗。2018年7月病情迅速恶化。但他依旧不放弃,坚持和病魔抗争。可惜人力难为,于2018年10月6日早上5点20分病逝于加州佛利蒙 Kaiser 医院。去逝前他接受了主耶稣为唯一救主,成为佛利蒙桥梁教会的一员。

 

Celebrating the Life of Tom Xiaotang Xian

Mr. Tom Xiaotang Xian, was born on April 2, 1962, in Hangzhou, China.  His father was Tangchao Xian, and his mother was Jialing Zhou. He was the eldest son of the family, followed by younger brother Xiaodong Xian and younger sister Ying Chau. He grew up in the campus of Hangzhou Nursing School. At the age of three, he entered a boarding school affiliated to Zhejiang Medical University. From February 1970 to July 1976, he attended the DaoMaoXiang Elementary School in Hangzhou. In September 1976, he enrolled in Hangzhou No. 7 Middle School and graduated from the high school in July 1980. His character was inward and peaceful, enjoying gourmet food, and making the sweet and sour pork ribs dish was his specialty.  During his youth, he loved all kinds of sports, including table tennis, basketball, horizontal bars, parallel bars, swimming, chess, and especially good at Go.  In the playground of Hangzhou Nursing School, in the gymnasium, in the blue waves of the Tiesha River, he left his cheerful figure. When he was in high school, he was fascinated by mathematics.  He often lingered in the ocean of mathematics and couldn’t resist himself.  He had participated in many math competitions and had repeatedly won.  At the same time, physics was also his strength.  In the autumn of 1980, he was admitted to the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Zhejiang University, and obtained a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in the summer of 1984. After graduation, he worked at Hangzhou Camera Factory as an assistant engineer.

In the summer of 1985, Mr. Xian went to the United States and attended in the School of Engineering at The University of Akron, Ohio, and received his master’s degree in mechanical engineering in June 1988. In the same year, he was admitted to Santa Clara University and received his second master’s degree in computer science in June 1990. He had worked for many large high-tech companies in Bay Area for nearly 30 years, to name a few, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Siemens Acuson, Hewlett Packard, eBay, etc.  From 1998 to 2011 he was also a professor at the Computer Science Department of Northwestern Polytechnic University in East Bay.  In 2000, Mr. Xian was naturalized as an US citizen.

In 1991, he met the current wife Ting Ying in the Bay Area and married at the Catholic Church of Santa Clara University in 1992. In 1995, the eldest daughter Shanel was born, and in 1998, the younger son Thomas was born.  Mr. Xian loved family, loved his wife and children, loved food and loved work.  Every year, the whole family will set aside a month of vacation time to go back to China to visit parents and relatives and traveled around the world.  He paid great attention to his children’s educations.  He personally tutored his children’s homework, especially mathematics. His tutoring brought great benefits to his children.

In June 2011, Mr. Tom Xiaotang Xian had a stroke and later was found out that he was in the fourth stage of cancer.  At that time, his oncologist doctor thought that his life might be less than six months.  However, he remained very positive and was actively engaged with doctors to receive various rehabilitation and treatments.  His cancer finally got well controlled in 2013. During his illness, he insisted on returning to China to visit his elder parents every year and to be filial.

In the summer of 2017, Mr. Xian’s illness recurred.  The chemo treatment began in September of that year. In July 2018, the health condition began to deteriorate. He still did not give up and kept on fighting with the disease. Unfortunately, his life stopped at 5:20 am on October 6, 2018, at the Fremont Kaiser Hospital in California.  A week before he died, he had accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord, becoming a Christian and a member of Fremont Bridge Community Church.
