Phoebe M Starkey

Birth date: January 19th, 1939

Death date: June 23rd, 2018

Phoebe had a warm personality, a radiant smile and an infectious laugh. She was the oldest daughter to her late parents, Marguerite and Walter McConnell and a loving sister to Constance and Robert. She grew up in Mansfield, OH, graduated from Miami University in 1960 and promptly moved out to Los Angeles, CA. In Los Angeles, Phoebe began her lifelong teaching career and met her future husband, Jack Starkey.

Phoebe and Jack married in 1969 and settled down to start their family in Belmont, CA. Phoebe was a loving wife and dedicated mother to her two children Jillian and Kyle. She was thrilled to later welcome her son-in-law Kevin and her two grandchildren; Alexander and Katherine into her family.

Phoebe taught Montessori for several years, before transitioning into teaching at Ralston Middle School. Phoebe spent 13 years teaching English to hundreds of Belmont children. Many of these former students were always excited to see her around town, happy to stop and talk to her many years later. Phoebe loved teaching middle school children, her passion for the English language and reading were infectious to her students and the many book clubs she participated in.

After retiring, Phoebe continued to stay involved in teaching through tutoring and substitute teaching. She was energized by the kids and passionate about helping each child to succeed in their own way. Phoebe and Jack traveled continuously, enjoying trips with friends and seeing new cities. Her favorite travels in later years were to visit her grandchildren and children on a regular basis.

Phoebe was a kind, loving woman who always had the time and patience to help someone. She is remembered in her family and friends hearts with great love and fondness.

Memorial services to honor Phoebe will be held August 18th, 11am at Skylawn Memorial Park. Phoebe is survived by her husband, Jack, sister, Constance, son Kyle of Scottsdale, AZ, daughter and son-in-law Jillian and Kevin Wille, and her grandchildren, Alexander and Katherine of Park Ridge, IL.

  1. Mrs. Starkey was a fantastic influence on hundreds of children growing up in Belmont in the 80’s. Now, middle aged with young children of my own, I owe much of my happiness and success to her. Rest in peace Mrs. Starkey. You’ll live fondly in my memories and I’ll try my best to be a good person and contribute to my community. That is my tribute to your legacy.

  2. Phoebe was a beautiful person – a mother, grandmother, teacher, friend – who left a trail of smiles wherever she went. Her love for life is carried on through her children and grandchildren. I feel lucky to have known her, and even luckier to call her daughter my friend. Love to you and you family.
